Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground is located near Grayling, MI 49738, USA. It's crucial for Michigan locals to understand that while it's situated in a highly desirable area for outdoor recreation, its accessibility is unique and requires specific planning. Unlike many state forest campgrounds, this particular site is primarily a "walk-in" campground. This means that vehicular access directly to the campsites is not available. Visitors must park their vehicles and then carry their camping gear, food, and supplies down to the riverfront camping areas.
Recent reviews and DNR maps indicate that attempting to access the campground directly by road can be challenging, with some routes potentially being gated off or overgrown. This highlights the rustic nature of the campground and its intention to provide a more secluded, wilderness-like experience. While this might deter some, it is precisely what attracts others looking to truly disconnect and earn their camping spot. For those approaching from major Michigan cities like Grand Rapids, Lansing, or Detroit, the drive to Grayling is straightforward. However, once in the vicinity of the campground, be prepared for a transition from paved roads to less maintained paths and then to a walk-in trail to reach the actual camping areas. It is highly recommended to consult the latest DNR information and maps prior to your visit to ensure you understand the current access points and trail conditions. This preparation will help ensure a smooth transition from travel to wilderness immersion, making your arrival at this secluded gem a rewarding part of your adventure.

Feb 10, 2019 · Maggie GasserLanded here while kayaking this weekend. Be advised: all signage says NO CAMPING; seems like an oxymoron (Canoe Camp...but no camping allowed). Nevertheless, a pleasant place to stop, with water and an outhouse.
