Angel of Shavano Campground

Salida, CO 81201, USA

4.0
Beautiful area with so many options, right on the Colorado trail. We had the group site reserved which has it's own picnic area and vault toilet. When the group site is not reserved, it serves as an open picnic area. Because of this we had random people entering our camp everyday to attempt to use the bathroom in the middle of our area and acting very entitled about it. It was very frustrating as we had 5 dogs and 5 toddlers running around. They seriously need better signs for that area when it is being occupied. - Nate Hull

Known for its remarkable cleanliness and the dedication of its camp hosts, Angel of Shavano provides a peaceful and well-maintained environment, ideal for those looking to reconnect with nature and truly unplug from daily distractions. Whether you're a seasoned hiker eager to tackle the Colorado Trail, an angler seeking trout in clear mountain waters, or a family simply looking for a beautiful place to relax, this campground offers a memorable Colorado outdoor adventure. Angel of Shavano Campground is conveniently located off County Road 240, near Salida, CO 81201, USA. This places it within the vast and beautiful San Isabel National Forest, in the heart of Colorado’s Collegiate Peaks region. To reach the campground, typically from the junction of Highways 50 and 285 in Poncha Springs, you would travel west on Highway 50 for approximately six miles. As you approach the small town of Maysville, you'll turn right onto County Road 240 and continue for about three miles. The road transforms from paved to dirt in sections, but is generally accessible for most vehicles, including RVs and trailers up to 30 feet. You will pass the entrance for the Angel of Shavano Group Area on the left before reaching the main entrance for the individual campground.

Accessibility to Angel of Shavano Campground is a key advantage for many Coloradans. The drive along County Road 240 offers picturesque views and is generally well-maintained, though it becomes a dirt road for the last stretch. This relatively easy access means it’s a viable option for a wide range of campers, from those in smaller RVs (up to 30 feet) to tent campers. However, it’s important to note that the individual campsites are best suited for tent camping due to the layout and potential for tighter turns for larger RVs. The group site, however, can accommodate larger vehicles up to 40 feet in its parking area. A significant aspect of its accessibility, or rather intentional lack thereof, is the absence of cell service. This is a crucial detail for visitors who are accustomed to constant connectivity; it means being truly prepared to unplug. This "no cell service" feature is often highlighted by repeat visitors as a positive, fostering a genuine wilderness experience. Despite being off the main highways, its proximity to Salida (about 30 minutes away) means that essential supplies or services are not too far. The elevation of 9,200 feet should be considered, especially for those accustomed to lower altitudes, as it may require a period of acclimatization.

Angel of Shavano Campground offers a foundational set of services designed for a traditional, comfortable, and well-maintained camping experience in the national forest.

  • Individual Campsites: The campground features approximately 20 first-come, first-served individual campsites. Each site is equipped with a parking spur, a picnic table, and a fire ring with a grill, providing essential amenities for cooking and gathering.
  • Group Campsite (Reservable): A distinct feature is the reservable Angel of Shavano Group Campground, which is separate from the individual sites but nearby. This group site is spacious, accommodating up to 100 people and 12-14 vehicles (or RVs up to 40 feet in its parking area), making it ideal for larger gatherings. It includes a picnic shelter, additional tables, six pedestal grills, a campfire circle with benches, and its own vault toilet.
  • Dedicated Camp Hosts: A consistent highlight in reviews is the presence of "amazing" and "kind and welcoming" camp hosts. They are praised for their "attention to detail" and for maintaining the campground in an "AMAZING" and "unturned almost like if there was no human activity" condition, ensuring a positive experience for visitors.
  • Clean Vault Toilets: The restroom facilities, which are vault toilets, are notably kept "nice and clean and equipped" by the camp hosts, a significant comfort in a rustic camping setting.
  • Drinking Water (Hand Pump): While running water is not available in the restrooms, there is a "nearby water pump to get water on site." This potable water source is a crucial amenity for campers.
  • Firewood for Sale: Firewood is often available for purchase from the camp host, providing convenience for campers who wish to have campfires (subject to current fire restrictions).
  • Trash Collection: Designated trash collection is provided, helping to maintain the cleanliness of the campground and promote responsible waste disposal.

This provides unparalleled access for hikers, mountain bikers (in non-wilderness sections), and horseback riders to explore segments of this iconic 487-mile trail that stretches across Colorado.
  • Stunning Mountain Views: Situated at 9,200 feet with "spectacular views of the surrounding mountains," the campground offers a picturesque backdrop. Its name comes from the image of an angel that appears from winter snow patterns on Mount Shavano, which is prominently visible.
  • River Proximity and Fishing: The "North Fork South Arkansas River flows next to the campground" and is easily accessible from many sites, offering a soothing ambiance and "rainbow and brook trout fishing" opportunities for anglers.
  • Pristine Natural Setting: The campground is beautifully "wooded with aspen and spruce trees," and the area is described as "kept unturned almost like if there was no human activity," emphasizing its natural beauty and the feeling of being immersed in untouched wilderness. Beaver ponds dot the landscape at the base of Shavano Mountain, adding to the natural charm.
  • Unplugged Experience (No Cell Service): For those seeking a true escape from technology, the complete absence of cell service is a key feature. It encourages visitors to disconnect from the digital world and fully engage with their natural surroundings and companions.
  • Exceptional Host Management: The consistently high praise for the camp hosts for their kindness, welcoming attitude, and meticulous maintenance of the campground and restrooms is a significant highlight, contributing to a superior visitor experience.
  • Recreational Facilities (Group Site): The group site, when reserved, offers additional fun facilities like a volleyball court, baseball field, and horseshoe pits, perfect for large groups, though visitors must bring their own equipment.
