Anacapa Island Campground Introduce
For Californians dreaming of an unparalleled outdoor adventure that truly takes you away from it all, Anacapa Island Campground offers a distinctive and primitive island escape. Situated within the breathtaking Channel Islands National Park, just off the coast of Ventura, this campground provides a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in a wild, untamed environment. This isn't your typical drive-up campsite; it's a destination that demands preparation, respects nature, and rewards intrepid campers with solitude, stunning coastal views, and an abundance of unique wildlife. If you're an experienced backpacker or a family seeking an extraordinary, self-sufficient island experience, Anacapa Island Campground is a remarkable gem in California's diverse landscape.
Anacapa Island Campground is located on East Anacapa Island, one of the five remarkable islands that comprise the Channel Islands National Park. The park's mainland headquarters and visitor center are located in Ventura, CA 93001, USA, which is the departure point for your island adventure. Reaching Anacapa Island is an experience in itself, as it is only accessible by boat, primarily via the park's authorized concessioner, Island Packers, operating out of Ventura and Oxnard harbors. This boat journey typically takes about an hour, setting the stage for your island immersion.
Upon arrival at the Landing Cove on East Anacapa Island, campers face an initial challenge: a climb of 157 stairs from the boat dock to the top of the island, where the campground is located approximately a half-mile walk away. This hike, which can be muddy and gnarly with luggage, necessitates careful packing and the use of sturdy hiking shoes or even rain boots, especially during wetter seasons. While a wagon can assist with luggage movement, lifting it up the staircase is required.
The island is small, with a maximum elevation of around 250 feet, making for manageable exploration once you've ascended to the campground. The remote, island nature ensures human-quiet solitude, a stark contrast to mainland life. While cell service (T-Mobile noted as decent but occasionally dropping out) might be available, the overall isolation enhances the sense of escape. This unique access method contributes significantly to Anacapa Island's primitive character and its appeal to those seeking a true disconnect from the everyday.
Camping at Anacapa Island Campground is a primitive experience, meaning campers must be largely self-sufficient. The services provided are fundamental, designed to facilitate an essential camping trip while preserving the island's natural integrity.
- Designated Campsites: There are seven individual campsites available, each with marked boundaries, accommodating 4-6 people per site. These sites are primitive, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hook-ups.
- Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and dining.
- Food Storage Boxes: Given the active wildlife, particularly mice and seagulls, each site has a food storage box (also known as a bear box). It's crucial to utilize these constantly and securely to protect food, despite some reports of lingering odors.
- Pit Toilets: Pit/vault toilets are provided. While user reviews mention cleanliness can vary (and the smell can be noticeable depending on proximity and season), they are functional and necessary. Campers are advised to bring their own toilet paper.
- No Potable Water: A critical point for all visitors is that there is NO potable water available on Anacapa Island. Campers must bring all their water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. A general guideline is 1 gallon per person per day.
- No Campfires or Charcoal Fires: Open fires and charcoal grills are strictly prohibited to protect the fragile island ecosystem. Only enclosed gas camp stoves are permitted for cooking.
- No Trash Services: Campers must adhere to strict "pack it in, pack it out" principles, meaning all trash, including food scraps, must be carried off the island. No trash containers are provided.
- Park Staff Presence: While not always on site, park rangers are often present on the island, especially upon arrival at the landing, to provide guidance and answer questions.
Anacapa Island Campground offers a series of unique features and highlights that create an unforgettable and truly wild camping experience for those prepared for its primitive nature:
- Spectacular Views: The campground is perched on the bluffs, offering "good views from camp" and "spectacular sunset views" from Inspiration Point, just a quick hike away. The "views are spectacular" from almost anywhere on the island, including breathtaking ocean vistas and the iconic Arch Rock.
- Unparalleled Solitude: Described as "human-quiet," the island provides a unique opportunity to "seek solitude from the human species." This sense of peaceful isolation is a major draw for those looking to escape crowded areas.
- Abundant Wildlife: The island is teeming with wildlife. "Hundreds of seagulls all around camp" are a constant presence (and can be loud, especially in the early morning, necessitating earplugs). Brown pelicans and occasional cormorants are also common. The island is a critical nesting site for seabirds, offering incredible birdwatching opportunities. While no Channel Island foxes are present, mice are active at campsites, requiring diligent food storage.
- Diverse Weather Experience: Campers can experience varied weather conditions in a short period, from clear skies (perfect for seeing the Milky Way and Andromeda at night) to fog, mist, and rain, offering a dynamic and engaging environment. Strong winds (up to 17-19 mph) are common, requiring robust tent staking and potentially a windbreaker.
- Ocean Access and Activities: The Landing Cove near the campground is ideal for "swimming, diving, snorkeling, and kayaking" in the clear waters and rich kelp forests, though no lifeguards are present. Access to the water is only via the dock due to the cliff island structure.
- Historic Lighthouse: The 1932 Anacapa Lighthouse, the last permanent lighthouse built on the West Coast, is a notable landmark and part of the island's cultural history.
- Limited Hiking, Maximized Scenery: While the island has only about two miles of trails, they offer incredible scenery, meandering to dramatic overlooks and coastal views. All hiking must stay on designated trails to protect fragile vegetation and nesting birds.
Despite challenges like bird/mouse poop, lack of shade/shelter from wind, and no potable water, these aspects contribute to the raw, untamed allure of Anacapa, making it a truly unique experience.

Anacapa Island Campground is an exceptional destination for Californians, particularly those who embrace a self-sufficient, primitive camping style and yearn for a truly unique connection with nature. Anacapa Island Campground Reviews
The biggest downside is there is lots of bird and mouse poop in campground - pretty gross honestly, which is why my review is so low. The food storage box smells like guano, which is gross, since you are storing your food in it. Every morning, the picnic table and anything we left on it would be covered in fresh mouse poop. When I got home, I felt the need to do a deep clean of all my gear because I was so grossed out (and I'm an experienced backpacker). There is no shade, nor is there any shelter from wind, so plan accordingly. The entire island is full of seagulls and camp is no exception. There are hundreds of seagulls all around camp - bring earplugs, they are loud, especially in the early morning. There are good views from camp, and inspiration point is a quick hike away for spectacular sunset views.I had decent service with T-Mobile, though it would drop out occasionally.
Aug 20, 2024 · James McGuireCamping requires a "boat-load" of preparation, especially if it is a 3 night trip to an island with no potable water.* Had a wagon to help us with luggage movement. If you have a wagon go through the visitor center, so as to ensure you have the least number of steps to lift the wagon with.* Had some kid help to move the luggage over 2x rounds up the staircase.* Had hiking shoes, but perhaps given misty muddy conditions might have worked better with rain boots. Then again we had 3 weather conditions on 3 days in November.Pros:* The place is human-quiet, a place near but far to seek solitude from the human species. Arguably we were with kids but still a valid point.* The campgrounds are clean, with marked boundaries.* The pit toilets (in fall-Nov) time didn't emanate too much of smell although we were right next to it on site 2.* It is kid friendly, in a sense there are no dangerous animals per say that could cause worry (not even a channel island fox); see con later.* The island is very small in comparison to the other islands, so come prepared for more relaxation or alternate ways to enjoy the island life.* Although Nov. Is not the peak season for gulls. This would make a literal experience for the book "Jonathon Livingston seagull".* The campsite on a clear sky can be seen from almost anywhere on the island.* Views are spectacular.* Experienced, clear, foggy and rain across 3 days. Different weather on each day.* You can enjoy a quick snorkel during the day, and the Milky way and Andromeda at night.* Lotsa gulls, brown pelicans and occasional cormorants (the gulls are noisy but the kids liked em)Cons:* There is no potable water, i.e., with kids it means you have to carry water; for e.g., we managed with 10 gallons/ (2 adults+2 kids) for 3 nights, where we conserved a bit and managed it.* There are mice near the campsite. Rodents tend to carry more viruses and thereby diseases. This makes it a bit complicated to process. Arguably we are in the wild and it should be expected but....* A muddy road to the campsite can be gnarly with a lot of luggage.* Winds can reach up to 17mph-19mph. If you have a larger family size tent be prepared to stake it well. A wind breaker would be nice addition to the campground.
Nov 30, 2024 · Kalyana S VenkataramanCampground is around 0.6 miles from the landing cove, stayed during bird nesting seasons in mid June. There are a couple of things to notice if you plan to come. The campground has storage cabinet, desk and chair, but full of bird poops. There are 2 bathrooms but no water, electricity, and no toilet papers when I visit, but it has internet and mobile signals.Birds will live right next to you, so make sure you bring earplugs or it’s too loud at night. The campground is fully exposed, no shade, it gets really hot during the daytime. Bring lots of water.Since it’s fully exposed, the wind can get really strong to blow away your tent, make sure your tent is strong enough. The wind will start blowing in the afternoon till sunrise, don’t underestimate it if there is no wind in the morningAlthough there are bird poops everywhere, you won’t smell it very often because of the wind, also no mosquitoes or flies because of that. There are small mice living on the island, but will only show up at night, I haven’t see them around the campground. This is truly a wonderland for bird lovers, camping is much better than day visit, you will enjoy the sunset, moon rise, the sky full of stars, the feeling of only you in the wilderness but surrounded by thousands of birds, come and visit, but get fully prepared!
Jun 22, 2024 · toofat zhIt’s a very unique area and campsite. There are gulls everywhere which brings a lot of noise and bird poop. The island is very small and easily explored in a few hours. The pit toilets are clean and there are food storage boxes and tables at each site. I would recommend bringing games/books or snorkeling gear to spend the time. Wouldn’t come back but really enjoyed the experience. Also you have to pack in all water and pack out all trash so be prepared.
