Amphitheater Campground is not just a place to stay; it's a launchpad for exploring the dramatic landscapes that surround Ouray. Situated at an elevation of 8,400 feet, the campground is named for the natural rock amphitheater that majestically overlooks the town, a stunning geological formation created by ancient volcanic and glacial activity. This unique setting ensures that every glance out of your tent or RV window offers a postcard-perfect view.

Amphitheater Campground is conveniently located near the town of Ouray, Colorado, with its address listed as Ouray, CO 81427, USA. This prime location places campers just a short drive from the heart of Ouray, often described as America's Switzerland due to its dramatic mountain setting. To reach the campground from Ouray, travelers typically head approximately two miles south on Highway 550, then turn left at the clearly marked campground sign and turnoff road.
While the campground is easily accessible by paved roads, it's important for visitors to note the nature of the campground's internal layout. The maximum recommended length for trailers is generally around 35 feet, and for single vehicles, it's about 26 feet. This balance of being immersed in nature while having the convenience of a charming town nearby makes Amphitheater Campground exceptionally accessible for many Colorado residents, offering a hassle-free transition from town amenities to wilderness serenity.

Amphitheater Campground Reviews
Ouray is stunning. Some areas of the campground are tight for long vehicles. I think the max is 35 ft for a trailer and 26 ft for a single vehicle. It is tight around the campground with small one-way paved roads. Walking distance to the waterfall. About 0.5 mi from the campground, downhill. The campground is also near the perimeter trail. Great overlook of Ouray. This year the camp hosts were great. Some of the more isolated sites are tent sites at the end of the loop.
Jun 30, 2025 · Anthony FontaniniThe hosts were the nicest folks around. Not to mention the gorgeous views everywhere you look! And if you need something like a patch for your sleeping pad (if you accidentally puncture it like I did) you can drive 5 minutes into town!
Jul 04, 2025 · John NalleyNice flat spots. I camped right by the river. It was absolutely great. The deer in the photo were right outside of my tent when I woke up. Great experience.
Jun 07, 2025 · Brit MansellNot only is ouray a beautiful town but the Amphitheater Campground might be the most beautiful campground I have ever had the absolute privilege of staying at! The camp sites have breath taking views and there are many fun hikes around. If you cant reserve a camp spot try for next year or go before june 1st and if you can get spot 6 its the best in the campground!!!
Feb 19, 2025 · Jack deRocheThis is an amazing campground that is quiet yet so close to downtown Ouray. It overlooks the town from maybe 500 above it in the thick forest with views of the towing amphitheater rock walls that envelope it. Sites are used mostly by tent campers and small teardrop size trailers. Steve, the host is highly knowledgeable, very thoughtful, and fun to talk to. He keeps the pit toilets exceptionally clean! His wife writes the daily weather forecast on a whiteboard for campers. It's obvious they love what they do. It's the best run campground I've been to.
