It’s designed for campers who prioritize tranquility, direct access to hiking trails, and the soothing sounds of a forest environment. Imagine pitching your tent, building a crackling campfire, and waking up to the mist rising over the Big South Fork. This campground caters to a desire for a genuine connection with nature, offering a peaceful setting that encourages relaxation and exploration. For Kentuckians looking to unplug and immerse themselves in the state's incredible natural heritage, Alum Ford Campground stands out as an exceptional choice.
Alum Ford Campground is conveniently situated at State Hwy 700, Whitley City, KY 42653, USA. This location places it squarely within the scenic Daniel Boone National Forest, an expansive and beloved natural treasure in Kentucky. Whitley City, while a smaller community, serves as a gateway to numerous outdoor adventures, making the campground an ideal base for exploring the region.
Its position on State Highway 700 provides relatively straightforward access, though visitors should be prepared for a more rural drive characteristic of forest roads. The campground's proximity to the Yahoo Falls area is a significant draw, offering immediate access to one of Kentucky's most impressive natural features and its associated hiking trails. While the campsites themselves are small and offer a more primitive experience, the ease of reaching this natural sanctuary from various parts of Kentucky makes it an attractive option for a weekend escape. It’s important to note that while small trailers might be manageable, larger RVs or trailers could find the space tight, reflecting the campground’s primitive nature. This ensures a quieter atmosphere and maintains the integrity of the natural surroundings, making it particularly appealing to those seeking genuine solitude away from crowded facilities.
As a primitive campground, Alum Ford offers essential services focused on providing a clean, safe, and authentic outdoor experience. The emphasis here is on simplicity and embracing the natural environment, rather than extensive modern conveniences.
- Primitive Campsites: The campground features small, secluded campsites designed for tent camping or very small vehicle camping. These sites offer a true back-to-nature feel, with privacy from neighboring campers.
- Pit Toilets: Very clean and well-maintained pit toilets are available for campers. Reviews consistently highlight their cleanliness and lack of unpleasant odors, which is a significant plus for primitive facilities.

- Picnic Tables: Most sites include a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and dining outdoors.
- No Potable Water: It is crucial for visitors to note that there is no potable water available directly at the campground. Campers must bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. However, natural streams are present in the area, which can be a water source for those equipped with proper filtration systems.
- No Hook-ups: As a primitive campground, there are no electric, water, or sewer hook-ups for RVs. This reinforces the rustic camping experience.
Alum Ford Campground's true appeal lies in its stunning natural surroundings and the opportunities they provide for outdoor activities. These highlights make it a standout choice for those seeking an immersive wilderness experience.

- Access to Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area (BSF): The campground offers a good location overlooking the Big South Fork. This vast area is renowned for its rugged gorges, natural arches, and extensive trail system, providing endless opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and exploring the unique geological formations of Kentucky.
- Extensive Hiking Trails: Beyond Yahoo Falls, the general area offers a network of trails suitable for various skill levels, allowing campers to truly explore the surrounding forests and natural beauty. Reviews consistently mention good access to trails directly from the campground.
- Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Visitors consistently praise the campground for its quiet and peaceful ambiance. Its primitive nature and seclusion from major roads ensure a tranquil environment, perfect for relaxation and reconnecting with nature.
- Secluded Campsites: The campsites are designed to offer a good degree of seclusion from one another, enhancing privacy and the feeling of being truly immersed in the wilderness.
- River Access: The campground provides good access to the river, offering opportunities for fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the sounds of flowing water.
- Dark Skies for Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, Alum Ford Campground offers excellent opportunities for stargazing on clear nights, a truly captivating experience for city dwellers.
- Varied Site Layouts: While primitive, some sites feature significant stairs between parking and the fire rings/picnic tables, offering unique layouts and potentially more secluded spots for tents or van camping. This variety allows campers to choose a site that best suits their preferences for privacy and access.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Small campsites with not much going on. Good location overlooking the BSF. Really close to yahoo falls area which has a nice hiking trail with a few overlooks and picnic sites.
June 02 · AdamReally nice primitive campground. No water available, but there are streams. Pit toilets are very clean with no smells. Sites are nice, fairly secluded from each other. Some have significant stairs between parking and fire rings/picnic tables so some are better than others for vans or vehicle camping. You could bring a small trailer, but definitely wouldn't bring a large one, space is tight.Overall the area is beautiful and the campground is quiet and peaceful, with good access to trails and the river.
April 13 · Duffy TillemanNeeded a place to stay w my mom and a friend for one night, it was great here. Campsites were perfect, spaced out, very quiet and peaceful. Went to yahoo Falls which is a short drive from the campground and Cumberland falls and eagle falls. Great trip, if we come back to the area we will stay here again.
August 09 · Julia PraterHiked in and got a spot (not a big campground), $5. Nice campsite, but you have to get there early to get one near the water. Level tent area and decent picnic table. Had bear proof food storage that was nearly human proof. Took some very strong fingers to operate the latch. Pit toilet was clean. No water. Most of the campsites are spaced pretty well, but a few are close together- nice for family or group, not nice when a single person takes one of the spots. A few noisy campers - kids and ATV's on a Friday night and pretty full. Noise echoes in the valley so everything is loud. Very pretty area.
May 02 · Seth HustedGreat primative campground. Spent a week here in mid October and there was one other camper at a time, so I'd say it's pretty private and secluded. Some of the spots are along the side of the hill and not even, but we got one of the 'higher' spots which was flat, spacious, and there was no headlights in our campsite, a huge plus. There is a vault toilet here but no water.
