Airplane Flats Campground is set in a spacious, open stand of majestic ponderosa pines, providing a tranquil and shady environment. The terrain is relatively flat, making it easy to set up a tent or navigate with a small trailer. The natural setting is a highlight in itself, with a diverse mix of flora and fauna. The area is known for its abundant wildlife, including the Abert squirrel, black bear, mountain lion, elk, turkey, and deer, offering a chance for nature watching and photography. The quiet atmosphere and beautiful surroundings make it a true escape for those who want to immerse themselves in the high-country landscape of Arizona.
Airplane Flats Campground is situated off of NF-33 near Payson, AZ 85541, USA. This location places it within the Tonto National Forest, providing a classic Arizona Rim Country experience. The campground's remote location means that accessibility requires navigating unpaved roads. From Payson, you'll travel approximately 33 miles east on Highway 260 before turning onto Young Road (Forest Road 512) and then onto Forest Road 33. The road can be a bit bumpy and washboarded, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended, though it is often accessible by two-wheel-drive vehicles during dry conditions. It's always a good idea to check road conditions before you go, especially after heavy rains. The remoteness of the site is part of its charm, as it helps to deter large crowds and maintain a peaceful environment.
While a map is always a good idea, the directions are relatively straightforward. It's about a 40-mile drive from Payson, taking you into a secluded part of the forest. The effort to get there is well worth it for the quiet and seclusion you will find. The campground's elevation is approximately 6,600 feet, which means it offers a welcome break from the summer heat and sees cooler temperatures, making it a comfortable destination from late spring through fall.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Great campground. Wish it was closer to the creek. Accessible campground right by restrooms was great for my daughter who uses a walker. Kids had a great time exploring the hills around. Lots of elk tracks and saw many squirrels some mountain bluebirds, stellar jays, and 3-4 garter snakes. Not much luck fishing.
July 08 · April UdatsuWhat would be a beautiful spot was covered in trash. We’ve been here twice and both times there were loud big groups playing musing and leaving garbage strewn from the campground to the stream. These same people were using wide nets to fish, clearing the stream of fish. A beautiful spot but needs some regulation.
June 26 · Cas RCampground was excellent but it snowed and we were not prepared and had to leave early otherwise it was perfect.
April 08 · Max SkullrVery nice dispersed campsite. Each site is equipped with fire pit, grill and picnic table. There is about a 4 mile unpaved road to get to the site so be prepared for that. There is Canyon Creek within walking distance of the site!
April 20 · Rylee PruittThis camp is so much fun. It is a long drive and secluded. We went and we were the only people in the whole place! It was amazing. Wild cows, and a fun creek to swim in to cool down. No water so make sure you bring enough or a purification method. It’s very very dusty.
