Agate Creek

Campground ★5.0

Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190, USA

5.0
Great campsite. Hike was pretty chill steep at beginning and end but otherwise flat. Lots of wildlife. Saw coyote chasing fox on way back too. Bear pole was nice. Walk down to river was tedious but with being up high we had an amazing view from the campsite. Fishing was sweet. River too wide and strong to cross safely. Great spot. - Isaac Schiffler

Agate Creek Introduce

For the seasoned Wyoming camper or anyone seeking a truly wild and untamed experience, Agate Creek offers a backcountry campsite that is unlike any other in Yellowstone National Park. This is a destination that promises solitude, a deep connection to nature, and the thrill of a hard-earned reward. Located a significant hike away from the nearest road, this campsite is not for the faint of heart, but for those who are prepared for the challenge, the payoff is an intimate encounter with the park's untouched wilderness. From spectacular views to abundant wildlife and incredible fishing, Agate Creek delivers an authentic outdoor adventure that will be etched in your memory.

Agate Creek is a place where you truly have to be prepared and self-sufficient. Its remote nature means you won't find the crowds or the typical amenities of front-country campgrounds. Instead, you'll be surrounded by the sounds of the wild and the incredible scenery of the Yellowstone backcountry. As noted by a visitor, this is a place where you might encounter a wolf at dusk or hear coyotes during the night—a humbling reminder that you are a guest in their home. The elevated position of the campsite provides an "amazing view," making the strenuous hike well worth the effort. It’s a great spot for those who want to feel truly alive and connected to the rugged landscapes that make Wyoming so special.

This is also an exceptional site for fishing and wildlife observation. The river is known for its sweet fishing opportunities, though its strength and width mean it's not safe to cross. The hike itself is an adventure, with a chance to see a variety of animals, from bison herds on the trail to coyotes and foxes. The site's elevated position offers a sense of security and a spectacular vantage point for viewing the area's geological and biological wonders.

Agate Creek is located within Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190, USA. Its remote address is an indication of its challenging access. The campsite is part of the park's backcountry system and is not reachable by car. Access is exclusively by hiking a trail, which begins at the Specimen Ridge Trailhead near the Tower-Roosevelt area of the park. The trail to the campsite is noted as a difficult hike, with a steep beginning and end. One reviewer described the hike as "very difficult, especially if it's raining," warning of a muddy trail that can be nearly impossible to climb. It is crucial to be prepared for a physically demanding trek, especially on the way out, which involves a steep climb.

The hike itself is part of the experience, offering stunning vistas and an opportunity for a unique wildlife encounter. A visitor recounts a one-mile detour around a large bison herd that was blocking the trail. This is a reminder that you must be prepared for the realities of the wild. The campsite itself is about 100 feet above the Yellowstone River, which you can descend to for fishing, swimming, or collecting fresh water. This elevation provides a great view but also means the walk down to the river is "tedious," as noted by a camper. The challenge of getting to Agate Creek is what keeps it so pristine and peaceful.
