FYI - Dry camping = no water, no electric, no dump station. There are dumpsters and pit toilets. Water is still turned off. Get registration sheet at the sign by the red building close to the entrance. It was quiet, though surprisingly busy, which was disappointing. Campsites seemed pretty clean but there were a few that didn't clean up after their dogs. Not cool! The park roads are well maintained and campers were respectful. There isn't much to do unless you have a small boat &/or like to fish. No trails that I could see but not a big deal. I was looking for a bit of peace & this fit the bill pretty well.I hope we will all do our part to keep places like this open. Follow the rules and clean up afterwards. Visitors consistently praise the quiet atmosphere, respectful campers, and the overall cleanliness, making it a perfect fit for those who are well-prepared and appreciate a more rustic approach to camping. This article will provide you with all the essential details about AEP Recreation Land Campground C, ensuring you’re ready for a fantastic, self-reliant outdoor escape right here in Ohio.

Location and Accessibility

AEP Recreation Land Campground C is located on Horse Run Rd, Cumberland, OH 43732, USA. More specifically, it's often referred to as Sand Hollow Campground and is found at the north end of Jesse Owens State Park at 9290 State Route 284 in McConnelsville, bordering Horse Run Lake. This location places it firmly within the expansive AEP ReCreation Land, a massive 60,000-acre area spanning Morgan, Muskingum, Noble, and Guernsey Counties in southeastern Ohio.

For Ohio locals, this location offers an excellent opportunity to explore a significant reclaimed wilderness area. While it provides a sense of seclusion and raw natural beauty, it's still accessible via well-maintained park roads within the AEP ReCreation Land system. Access to the campground typically involves a self-registration process near a sign by a red building close to the entrance, where you can pick up a registration sheet. It's crucial to note that a free annual AEP Recreation Lands permit is required for camping, fishing, or hunting on these lands, which can be obtained from the AEP website or local AEP offices and sporting goods stores. This location makes it a prime spot for residents in the central and southeastern parts of the state to easily reach a large, diverse outdoor recreation area that's perfect for a weekend getaway focused on fishing, quiet camping, and enjoying the Ohio wilderness.

Services Offered

AEP Recreation Land Campground C, true to its "dry camping" nature, offers a more primitive set of services designed for self-sufficient campers who appreciate a back-to-basics experience.

  • Designated Primitive Campsites: The campground offers designated sites suitable for tents and self-contained RVs and trailers. These sites are primitive, meaning they do not provide water, electric, or sewer hookups. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring.

  • Pit Toilets: Pit toilets (also known as vault latrines) are available on-site. Reviews indicate these facilities are generally "nice and clean," though campers are advised to bring everything they might need as they might be a short walk or drive from individual sites.

  • Dumpsters for Trash Disposal: Dumpsters are provided for waste disposal, encouraging campers to keep the area clean and "pack it in, pack it out" in terms of personal refuse. Adherence to rules and proper cleanup is highly encouraged to keep the area open and pristine.

  • Lake Access (Horse Run Lake): Campground C borders Horse Run Lake and offers boat ramp access. While boating is permitted (with a 9.9 horsepower limit on motors for all AEP lakes), swimming and wading are generally prohibited in AEP Recreation Land lakes.

  • First-Come, First-Served Basis: Campsites are available on a "first come, first served" basis, meaning no reservations are taken. This allows for spontaneous trips but also means it can be "surprisingly busy" at times, so arriving early, especially on weekends, is advisable.

  • Self-Registration System: Upon entering, campers will find a sign with a red building nearby where registration sheets are available. Campers are required to self-register their site by filling out a form and dropping it off in a designated box.

Features / Highlights

AEP Recreation Land Campground C, while primitive, boasts several key features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for a specific type of Ohio camper.

  • Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite being surprisingly busy at times, the campground is consistently described as "quiet" and offers "a bit of peace." This is a significant draw for campers seeking a tranquil escape from urban noise and crowds. Respectful campers contribute to this serene environment.

  • Excellent Fishing Opportunities: Fishing is a primary pastime and a major highlight here. The campground borders Horse Run Lake, one of over 350 stocked lakes and ponds within the AEP ReCreation Land. These lakes are known for being well-stocked, offering great prospects for anglers, especially for small stocked lakes. Note the 9.9 HP motor limit on boats.

  • Ideal for Boondocking and Self-Contained RVs: For those who enjoy "boondocking" (camping without hookups) or have self-contained RVs and trailers, Campground C is an excellent fit. It provides designated sites and a supportive environment for this style of camping, requiring campers to bring their own water and manage their waste.

  • Well-Maintained Park Roads: Reviewers note that the "park roads are well maintained," which contributes to easy access to the campground and the various sites within it, even for larger RVs and trailers.

  • Access to Vast Reclaimed Wilderness: Campground C is part of the extensive 60,000-acre AEP ReCreation Land, a remarkable example of successful land reclamation. This offers campers access to a huge area for various outdoor activities, including hunting (with proper Ohio licenses and AEP permits), and exploring the regenerated forests and numerous waterways.

  • Hiking Trail (with caveats): There is a 2.6-mile hiking trail around Horse Run Lake. While some parts may be overgrown and not heavily maintained, the eastern side offers opportunities for shorter walks, appealing to those who enjoy a bit of light exploration.

  • Free Camping with Permit: One of the biggest highlights is that camping at AEP Recreation Land campgrounds, including Campground C, is free. The only requirement is to obtain and carry a free annual AEP Recreation Lands permit, making it an incredibly affordable option for outdoor enthusiasts.

Promotions or Special Offers

AEP Recreation Land Campground C, as part of the broader AEP ReCreation Land system, operates on a unique model that doesn't involve traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. Instead, its primary appeal and "special offer" is the fact that it provides free camping. This is a significant benefit for Ohio locals and visitors alike, making it an incredibly budget-friendly option for outdoor enthusiasts.

The core "offer" is:

  • Free Primitive Camping: There is no nightly fee for staying at Campground C. Campers can utilize the designated sites on a first-come, first-served basis without charge.

  • Free AEP Recreation Lands Permit: The only requirement for accessing and camping on AEP ReCreation Land is obtaining a free annual permit. This permit covers activities like camping, fishing, and hunting across the entire AEP ReCreation Land. It's a lifetime permit, though users are required to obtain a new one annually for up-to-date information. This permit can be downloaded from the AEP website or acquired at local AEP offices or specific sporting goods stores in the vicinity.

  • Access to Extensive Recreational Opportunities: While not a financial discount, the "offer" includes access to 60,000 acres of reclaimed land featuring over 350 lakes and ponds for fishing (with an Ohio fishing license), miles of trails for hiking, and areas for hunting (with an Ohio hunting license). This broad access to diverse outdoor activities for no camping fee is the primary value proposition.

Given this model, potential campers should not expect discounted rates or package deals. The value is inherently built into the free access. The most important "special offer" is simply the opportunity to enjoy vast tracts of well-managed wild land for free, requiring only a free permit and a commitment to responsible use.
