Acadia East Campground

574 US-1, Gouldsboro, ME 04607, USA

4.0
i had a great stay here with my 4 young adult kids and dog. This is the perfect spot if you want an off the beaten path, rustic camping experience, while still being close to all the beauty of the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park. Carefully choose your site for size, proximity to the privy, remoteness, and distance to parking lot. The land is beautiful and you can’t really see or hear any other campers for the density of the woods. You can hear the highway sounds but that didn’t bother us. We would definitely stay here again on another trip to Acadia. - Kristin Batstone

Acadia East Campground Introduce

For Mainers who crave an authentic wilderness experience without sacrificing proximity to some of the state's most iconic natural wonders, Acadia East Campground in Gouldsboro offers a unique and appealing option. Tucked away on the captivating Schoodic Peninsula, this campground provides a rustic, off-the-beaten-path escape, perfect for those who truly want to immerse themselves in the quiet beauty of Downeast Maine. It's not your typical amenity-rich resort; instead, Acadia East Campground prides itself on being a self-serve, backcountry-style tent campground, designed for adventurers who appreciate simplicity and the raw embrace of nature.

This campground has carved out a niche for itself as a haven for those seeking a more traditional camping experience, far from crowded RV parks. If you're looking to unwind under a canopy of trees, with only the sounds of the forest and the distant hum of the highway as your soundtrack, Acadia East Campground could be your next favorite Maine camping spot. It's particularly well-suited for visitors eager to explore the serene and less-traveled Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park, which is a significant draw for many local outdoor enthusiasts.

Location and Accessibility

Acadia East Campground is conveniently located at 574 US-1, Gouldsboro, ME 04607, USA. This address places it strategically close to the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park, a quieter and often less congested alternative to the bustling Mount Desert Island area of the park. Reviewers frequently highlight its "great proximity to Schoodic," noting that it's just about a 10-minute drive to the entrance of this beautiful part of Acadia.

While the campground is on a main road (US-1), offering relatively easy access for vehicles, it's important to understand the nature of the campsites themselves. Acadia East Campground is described as a "backcountry-style wilderness campground," and some sites require a hike from the parking area. One customer noted that the campground "rests on the side of the mountain" and that "paths are very steep," with "elevation gain." This suggests that while vehicle access to the general area is straightforward, reaching individual campsites may involve some physical exertion and navigating uneven, root-filled terrain. This is a crucial detail for campers to consider when choosing a site and packing their gear.

Despite being near US-1, the density of the woods at Acadia East Campground helps to create a sense of remoteness. While you might hear "highway sounds," many campers find that this doesn't detract from the overall peacefulness of the experience. Its location makes it an excellent base for exploring not just the Schoodic Peninsula, but also other attractions in the wider Downeast Maine region, offering a balance between accessibility and a genuine natural escape.
