A well shaded campground right next to the Upper Kings River. I suspect it's a walk-in campground only with no reservations.I was day hiking here with my dog and stopped here to rest. We had the entire campsite to ourselves despite it being on a weekend. The campground has several tall pines which provided the both of us with much welcomed shade and a respite from the warm weather.I hung my hammock here and relaxed for a while, eventually falling to sleep while being serenaded by the Kings. This campground is clean and scenic. - James Le

2nd Pines Campsite Introduce

For Californians seeking a truly serene and unpretentious escape into the High Sierra Nevada, 2nd Pines Campsite offers a hidden gem of a camping experience. Tucked away along the pristine Upper Kings River, this campground provides a deeply shaded and remarkably peaceful setting, a stark contrast to more bustling, developed recreational areas. It embodies the essence of rustic camping, inviting visitors to disconnect from the everyday and immerse themselves fully in the calming embrace of nature.

What sets 2nd Pines Campsite apart, as highlighted by a recent visitor, is its idyllic tranquility. Imagine setting up your camp under a canopy of towering pines, where the air is cool and crisp, even on warmer days. The constant, soothing serenade of the Kings River flowing nearby provides a natural soundtrack to your relaxation. This is not a place for loud parties or extensive amenities, but rather for quiet contemplation, gentle recreation, and a profound sense of peace. Its likely walk-in access further enhances this secluded feel, discouraging large RVs and fostering a more traditional, tent-camping atmosphere.

Whether you're a solo adventurer with your furry companion, a couple seeking a romantic hideaway, or a small group looking for a back-to-basics experience, 2nd Pines Campsite promises a clean, scenic, and deeply refreshing stay. It’s a place where you can easily while away hours in a hammock, lulled to sleep by the river's flow, or embark on a leisurely day hike along its banks. This campground serves as a reminder of the simple, yet profound, joys of spending time in California's magnificent wilderness, making it an ideal choice for locals craving an authentic outdoor retreat.

2nd Pines Campsite is conveniently located near Shaver Lake, CA 93634, USA, specifically right next to the Upper Kings River. This places it within the vast and beautiful Sierra National Forest, a premier destination for outdoor recreation in Central California. The exact positioning along the Upper Kings River means it benefits from the pristine waters and lush riverside vegetation characteristic of this less-developed portion of the river.

Accessing 2nd Pines Campsite typically involves traveling along Highway 168 East from Fresno, passing through the popular towns of Shaver Lake and Lakeshore. While Shaver Lake is a well-known hub for amenities and larger campgrounds, 2nd Pines is generally found further into the more remote sections of the Kings River area. Based on user reviews suggesting it's a "walk-in campground," access likely involves parking nearby and carrying your gear a short distance to the campsites. This design inherently preserves its peaceful atmosphere by limiting vehicle traffic directly within the camping area.

The proximity to Shaver Lake provides campers with easy access to a range of services, including gas stations, grocery stores, and fishing supplies, ensuring you can stock up on essentials before heading to the more secluded campsite. Furthermore, the location offers excellent opportunities to explore other nearby attractions. Shaver Lake itself is popular for boating, fishing, and swimming. Deeper into the High Sierra, areas like Huntington Lake and the numerous trailheads leading into designated wilderness areas are within a reasonable drive, allowing campers at 2nd Pines to use it as a tranquil base for exploring the broader Sierra Nevada. Always check local forest service alerts for road conditions and any seasonal closures, as high-elevation areas can be impacted by snow, typically from late fall through late spring.

While 2nd Pines Campsite offers a primitive and natural camping experience, it does provide essential services that contribute to a comfortable and authentic outdoor stay.

  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite or designated area typically includes a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation and dining.
  • Fire Rings: Fire rings are generally available at campsites, allowing for campfires (when conditions permit) and outdoor cooking. It is crucial for campers to always check current fire restrictions with the Sierra National Forest before lighting any fires.
