If you routinely sleep cold, start from the comfort value and build extra margin. A person who “runs warm” still needs contingency for wet, windy, or unexpectedly cold conditions.
Why the sleeping pad matters
A sleeping bag insulates by trapping air in its loft. The insulation beneath your body is compressed, so it provides less protection from the ground. The sleeping pad supplies much of that bottom insulation.
Camping pad insulation may be expressed as an R-value, which describes resistance to heat flow under a test method. A higher value indicates more insulation under the stated test conditions.
