Prevent burns by using a stable stove in a ventilated outdoor cooking area. Never operate a fuel-burning stove inside a tent, vehicle, or other enclosed sleeping space. Boiling does not remove sediment or chemical contamination and requires fuel, time, and cooling capacity.

Filtering and disinfecting

Filter claims are not interchangeable. CDC notes that many portable filters remove parasites but not viruses or all bacteria. A filter with an absolute pore size of one micron or smaller, or certified for applicable cyst reduction, can address parasites; smaller specified pore sizes may address bacteria, but viruses generally require another method unless the device is specifically designed and validated for them.
