If you love stargazing on a warm summers night, the Kelty TN 2 Person lightweight backpacking tent may be the tent of your dreams. With a rainfly that can fully rollback and provide unimpeded 360-degree views nature lovers will be able to enjoy the beauty of their surroundings while still staying protected against bugs and other insects. If it starts to rain then you can simply roll the fly back in place again all without having to leave the tent. Kelty has designed their new tent with stargazing and backpacking in mind.

In our roundup of the 5 best lightweight 2 person tents, the Kelty TN2 strikes an even balance between weight and durability. This dependable and lightweight tent can be easily used on a hiking trip without causing too much damage to your back or your wallet.

Size and comfort

Weight: 4lb 4oz
Color: Gray/Green
Center Height: 42in
Base Size: 83 x 50in

Although the size of the TN2 is quite small it feels bigger once your inside thanks to its vertical walls. A 2-door design allows for easy entry and exit for two people but for some reason one door is a bit smaller than the other. It’s quite comfortable with two people and if your camping alone you’ll have more than enough space for you and all your gear. The 40D nylon floor is durable enough that you can go without a footprint which will save you on weight. The fly is also graded at 40D nylon that provides excellent protection against rainfall.

There are two pockets at the head of the tent, one at the junction of the floor and one at the mesh. Unfortunately, although the ceiling has loops for a hanging platform none is provided.

Weight

With a weight of 4lb 4oz, the Kelty is light but not as light as other tents we've reviewed. For its price though and the stargazing ability you get with it, this is still a great tent for any backpacking trip. It’s lighter than the Mountainsmith Morrison 2 but also heavier than the MSR Hubba Hubba so it strikes an even balance between weight and durability.

Ease of Setup

To ensure a stress-free setup the two corners at the head of the tent are green, as are the ends of the two tent poles. The same goes for the corners of the fly that clip into them. As the poles are attached by clips there is no awkward threading of poles through sleeves.

Even in a light wind, you should be able to get this tent up in only four minutes. It will take a bit more time to stake out the fly and fully attach it to the poles but even in an emergency, you can get the TN2 quickly setup with no stress.

One customer got it up for the first time in the dark and with no instructions in eight minutes, which goes to show how uncomplicated it is.

Dismantling

Dismantling shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes. Once you got all the stakes out the tent folds up nicely in a handy sack that has a wide-and- flat design rather than the usual cylinder that most tents pack into. This makes it easier to stuff the whole thing in your backpack without having to separate all the individual parts.

Durability and Quality

There have been little to no complaints from customers so far about the build quality. Despite it taking a beating from string winds without the fly on no one found any issues with its durability or suffered any excessive rain or wind damage. As the floor and rainfly are both made from 40D nylon you can see where the extra weight comes from but this also ensures
better protection and durability. The floor is strong enough that you can go without a footprint if needed.

Camping Situations for Best Use

If you’re thinking of doing a long hike through tough conditions it should be obvious that this tent is too heavy for that. All those extra ounces can really add up on the trail so spend your money on something lighter like the MSR Hubba Hubba or Big Angus Fly Creek.

That aside, the weight is still manageable that you can make shorter hiking trips without too much trouble, and if you’ve got a partner on the trail you can share the weight. The TN2 is versatile enough that you can still take it way out into the wild and just large enough that two people can share it comfortably. You’ll need to get way out away from any cities to make the most of its stargazing abilities and it allows for just that.

Customer Experiences

Customer reviews of the Kelty TN2 have been positive for the most part with customers loving the stargazing mode and incredible durability of the floor. One customer camped on a mountain slope when a rainstorm was coming in. Despite a river practically running under the tent from the runoff, the 40D nylon floor kept him completely dry. The only issue he had
with the design was the slop of the roof which can lead to a water puddle forming. Others loved the TN2 for its lightweight and stargazing mode which allows incredible morning views if you pick your location right. Speaking of the fly, although it’s true that you can roll it back without having to exit the tent this means you can’t stake it down. If strong winds hit you’ll be forced to exit and stake it down.

Accessories to Consider

Add some extra pieces of kit for a more enjoyable camping experience with these products we recommend.

Kelty TN2 Footprint

Kelty TN2 Footprint

Although the 40D nylon protection on the TN2 allows you to go without a footprint it’s still better to use one if you can. Kelty has their very own tarp, the Kelty TN2 Footprint, to go with the TN2 and provide even better protection for you and your tent. Weighing only eight ounces and made from 68D polyester this footprint will ensure your TN2 last longer and better protected.

Kelty Gear Loft

We mentioned that the TN2, although coming with loops on the roof for a head loft, doesn’t come with one. if this is an issue for you then you’ll have to buy the Kelty gear Loft separately. Most gear lofts that come with a tent tend to be of inferior quality but you won’t have to worry about that with this one. With a weight of only two ounces and measuring 12 x 19in, this gear loft is a cinch to install and provides some extra storage space for your gear. It also includes a lantern clip for easy lighting.

Kelty Adjustable Pole

Kelty Adjustable Pole

If your expecting a lot of rain on your trip you can give the TN2 greater protection by utilizing the Kelty Adjustable Pole with the TN2 footprint to raise a tarp over your tent. This will solve the problem of a water pool forming on the roof and will give you more confidence in a heavy rainstorm. The pole is made of lightweight aluminum which only weighs 1lb 7oz and comes with its own carry bag for easy storage. You can utilize this pole in a lot of ways such as holding a hammock up.

Conclusion

This lightweight tent is spacious and durable thanks to its exceptional build quality. this though comes at the cost of more weight which is always a compromise you need to make when choosing lightweight tents. Still, 4lb 4oz isn’t too bad and if you split it between two people it’s very manageable. After a very easy setup, you will awake to unsurpassed views through its 360-degree stargazing mode. The rollback fly is easily its biggest selling point and good reason to pick one up for a trip into the backwoods. Overall this is a well-recommended tent. If you are looking for something at a mid-range price that allows a lot of flexibility then the Kelty TN is one of the best lightweight backpacking tent out there.
